To thaw:

For a bad or negative relationship to gradually improve

To become friendlier


<Note: this idiom is usually used to discuss international politics and international relations>


Example 1:

The visit by the US president to North Korea demonstrated a thaw in relations.


Example 2:

From the mid-19502 to the 1960s, there was a thaw between the US and Soviet Union known as the ‘Khrushchev Thaw’. This ended when Leonid Brezhnev came to power.
